upgrade to new ball

Question
QUESTION: Just started bowling in a league again after about 13 years off and was looking to upgrade to a new ball.  I am currently using a Columbia Beast urethane ball from the early 90's and averaging 180.  I'm a lefty and my ball speed is around 16-17 mph and I play more straight down 7-10 board with a more gentle hook than a big bender.  The lane conditions are probably medium oil most of the time.  I have been doing research online, but most ball reaction videos are guys play deep inside lines throwing out to 5 board or farther.  Just hoping you give me a few suggestions of different balls I might want to look at that I could still play the same kind of line.  I am looking to stay around $100.
Thanks for your help.

Keith

ANSWER: Keith,
The Avalanche series from Brunswick uses a similar core to the Beast (like their reactive resin Rhino Pro Teal actually). In urethane look at the AMF Hype or Storm Natural (stronger than what you roll but there is more oil on the lanes than 13 years ago, at least on some parts of the lane). Lots of stronger stuff on the market, could you use more than what your getting from the Beast?

Thanks for the question. Good luck and good bowing.

QUESTION: Thanks for answering my questions, yeah I think I would like something a little stronger than the Beast.  Also what about weight 15 or 16 lbs?

Answer
Keith,
If you intend to continue to use the Beast (for spares or as the lesser of two in ball reaction) I'd suggest getting the same weight, realize that jumping back and forth to two different weight balls will throw off your timing.

If you will only roll the new ball and would like to drop down a pound, an updated fit (improved control and less grip pressure) and lighter ball should result in a small increase in your ball speed.

The Avalanche series offers a good option, mid price Ebonite Balls (Bash, Clash, Boom, Smash have some features your ball driller can discuss with you), Columbia introduced a VERY aggressive Freeze line this year and may be more than your looking for, Roto Grip has two new balls just introduced the Dark Star and Riot that might fit, Storm has a Tropical line that can out perform a urethane Beast (your ball speed should help with this one though). There are a few other balls in the entry level (Brunswick Power Grooves, Ebonite Tornados, 900 Global Links, AMF Smoke line and Columbia 300 Scout line, that might be an option but without knowing more about conditions and your rev rate and skills (they'll be less, or harder to control with your ball speed) I can't recommend them.

Thanks for the follow up good luck with your new ball.
