stroker to play inside?

Question
QUESTION: I'm a right handed stroker (180 avg) with my "A" game of course playing the outside line.  As the lanes dry out I end up moving left and often find myself adjusting toward the center and wondered at the point that I'm so far left that if I could throw more of a cranker release to be more versatile.  Is this possible with a ball drilled to go strong and long.  Or do you need to drill a ball for maximum hook to do this?  I also adjust speed to create less or more hook depending on the condition therefore, wanted to know if this is correct that I should explore throwing more of a cranker release to play the inside?

ANSWER: Jim,
Sounds like you're trying a bunch of things to solve one problem. When lanes dry out, move out of the dry.

Unfortunately, some of the options you mentioned (changing your release and adjusting speed) are the most difficult physical changes to make and remain consistent. Lots of practice helps but, when you have to move off the dry (or you don't have a ball that can deal with it), typically, the oil volume and coverage keeps straighter guys out of the middle. If you have to move in, the oil and the change in ball path messes up straighter guys.

You don't have to change your game to get better reaction, but a ball change (stronger cover, possibly with a surface adjustment and a stronger layout to allow the ball to recover and react stronger than balls drilled for straighter lines will definitely be an option.

Consistency is my suggestion. Play the speed and delivery you always do, but have your driller adjust the layout of one ball (pick a strong one) that matches what you will need to have the ball do and then be aware of surface, because sometimes the oil volume can't be handled by strong ball and layout alone, but rougher surface is necessary. It's hard sometimes to invest in this kind of idea and not use it, but remember the more oil you remove, changes the lane for every player in that area. So don't tear up the middle of the lane in game one, when the trashed, burned up middle of the lane is all that's left for games two and three. Thanks for the question, hope I covered everything. Bowl well.

QUESTION: First off thank you so far so much for the sage advice.  So just to be clear, what you are saying is that I should try getting a strong ball drilled for a medium hook and throw the same stroker release from the inside?  Right now, i have just one ball that I use an Ebonite Angular One.  Have been contemplating increasing my arsenal with a plastic spare ball and have had my eye on the ebonite mission.  What do you think about getting the ebonite mission drilled for a medium hook, do you think that will help me out playing an inside line?  Basically I have never bowled with a ball that has a strong layout, so I dont know what to expect.
Jim

Answer
Jim,
Have your driller layout the Mission stronger than the Angular One, with the idea of moving inside with more surface and more recovery. The stronger ball will allow you to combat the heavier oil and longer path to friction inside when the normal path to the pocket becomes to dry to control. Have the driller either watch you play the deeper angle to see the reaction (or lack there of) and explain what you need the ball to do. Good luck with the new ball the Mission looks like a good one.
