Rasing Ball Track

Question
QUESTION: Looking for information on rasing ball track for a bowler who has changed from a 4.5" x 0.25" UP to a 2.5" x 2" DOWN PAP. Would changing thumb pitch for a faster release help? Any suggestions?

ANSWER: Tommy,
The player is spinning the ball. Occasionally a grip length that is too long will create this effect, or, surprisingly, also one that is too short. Has anything been changed recently with the bowlers grip? Lateral pitches can sometimes help control how a player gets out of a ball (what are the pitches of the current fit?). I'd like to know what you think caused this first (ball weight change? grip change?)? Let me know more and I can suggest what's causing the change in the roll of this players ball and some suggestions to fix it.
Thanks for the question. Are you a driller?

QUESTION: The bowlers span is 4 5/8" overall span with thumb pitch 1/16 " right and 1/8" forward. The finger pitches are 1/8 " away, as bowler mentioned asking the  driller for a relaxed grip without making the overall span  short. In checking the span the bowler for a relaxed grip could be 4 3/4" span and using the Bill Taylor method the thumb pitch should be more like 1/8" reverse. The ball is drilled with a short pin [2-inches] and the pin is below the middle finger in line with the span center. The ball cg is close to the thumb. Looks like the ball was setup to roll early, and not an ideal layout for a house condition. The ball is a Cell will 4000 finish. I stopped drilling balls back around 2000. Getting back into bowling myself again. Is a longer pin better [3-4"] for a lower track player using asymmetrical blocks? Thanks for responding back!

Answer
Tommy,
It sounds like your telling me the grip is a little short. Unless fingers are short and hand is very dry the bowler is struggling to get out of the ball. Have you seen them roll? Very late release?

The pitch in the thumb is causing very late thumb timing (I'd expect). For an average hand, even in a relaxed (not short) grip, I expect about 1/8 to 1/4 reverse for the span you mentioned, then adjusted less for the away pitch in the fingers.

You mention short pin and pin in the grip, sounds like about a 2 inch Pin to PAP which might be to close leaving some core influence unused, causing the ball to want to roll too early.  With some surface, the ball shouldn't skid like crazy (which happens to a lot of spinners). It probably works OK gunning the ball down the friction. But it also won't hook/recover a lot.  A spinner layout usually doesn't result in much imbalance, I like to use bigger pins and big weight holes, lots of flare to tame the reaction, get it rolling earlier and more controllable backend, especially on the Great Wall of China THS (Typical House Shot). The Cell is a great piece, but it sounds like the driller didn't know this guy would get around it with the shorter grip. Not a spinner layout. Thanks for the question. Let me know how it turns out. Welcome back.
