TUGGING the ball
Question
im and older bowler (61) have been a 200 average plus for ever. the last few years have gotten in the habit of tugging the ball, (pulling it to right of my mark) quite often. is there a reason for this, or what can i do to stop doing it. thanks
Answer
Tod,
Are you left handed? A righty might miss right, but its not a tug.
Loss of grip strength may have you wrapping the ball behind you as you seek to exert grip pressure to hold on. As players age, I suggest a yearly evaluation and often slight adjustment of the pitches and/or spans of the ball fit.
If you've not had anything done in the last couple years, have your ball evaluated by your local pro shop professional (ideally IBPSIA member), and have them look at ball weight and grip pressure necessary to roll the ball the way you want to. If you have finger grips, they wear enough in a season for the grip to feel loose, finger holes to feel slick, do you change them regularly?
Happily, as we age, adjustments can be made to help the ball "let go of you" instead of you having to let go of the ball. If only more older proprietors were out rolling with some of the modern equipment, we'd probably see more oil! Thanks for the question, good luck and good bowling.
