QuestionHi, thanks for fielding my question.
I'm a little concerned with by back swing at the moment. During my swing I'm really grabbing the ball which slows down the swing and leads to my ball rolling out a lot. My release is typically right up the back of the ball. I've been told I need to stop grabbing it and decelerating and also to get around it more. The problem is I don't really know what I can do to change it.

True Bowler Adjustment
Hmmmm Chris, you say your backswing is letting you down. I can only go by my experience. Experience tells me that you are probably executing the "pro loop" behind you at the top of your back swing. In my book True Bowler Adjustments, I talk about how the thumb goes back and to the outside behind the back, instead of rotating to the inside.
When a player does this, they may not get the ball down in the swing soon enough to spin it forward, .... or to send the ball forward in the flat spot at the bottom of the swing. They often hold on to it too long or may grab it at the bottom of the swing.
The swing action becomes a slow uplift that kills the shot, or a slow uplifting spin that kills the shot as the thumb stops moving forward through the ball. You will not normally see a professional bowler go around the ball. This is why getting around it may not be good. It actually slows down the speed of the ball. Especially, if you throw "a backup ball" at release.
If you do this, then you need a coach plain and simple.
To fix your problem, try to fix your timing first. It may sound out there that someone would say, hey it's his hand, not his feet!" Ohhhh but how wrong they can be... If I can get you to swing and step at the correct moment the ball will let go of you instead of you letting it go.

Okay, for your shot solution, here it comes, so dig in.
Great timing is created (according to Coach Gary!) by getting your 3rd to the last step in time with your backswing.
Basically, the opposite foot and the ball will swing back at the same time. So, for a four step the ball needs to move on the first step and come back with the second step. For a five stepper, you will delay the ball movement for two steps, move it down and back with the third step and continue to accelerate to the foul line and post your shot consistently!!!!
Chris, by now you know I am taking a shot in the dark here. But my experience tell me you can probably deliver the ball pretty good. Some how you are grabbing the ball through "late timing." Often, this can be verified by you because you don't foul at the foul line but you get close to it. If you have early timing, the ball is already gone by the time you stop moving to the foul line.
