Middle Finger Pain
Question
I recently injured my wrist while bowling, and have had to start using a wrist device (I've been using a Storm Gadget) to bowl. At first I was getting blisters due to a short span on my thumb. I use switch grips, and had an extra, so I took the tape out of the front, and took about 1/16" off the front of the slug. No more blisters on the thumb, but now I'm getting pain in my middle finger (just above the first joint). I use a fingertip grip, and after I took a bit out of the slug, I double checked my pitch to make sure that I didn't accidentally change it by taking too much out of the front of the slug. Thumb pitch is good, ball feels great off of my hand, and I'm not having any acute pain, but more like a lingering pain that is the worst within ten minutes after I quit bowling, then slowly subsides. I also had new inserts put in for my middle finger, as the old ones were too small in some of my balls. I'm thinking that the span change from using the Gadget is the cause, but I usually get blisters on my thumb when that happens, this is the first time that I've had this pain in my middle finger. The only other thing that I can think of is that I may not be lifting from under the ball, but more from the side, though even with the Gadget on, my track is still the same as without it. I'm obviously lost as to that this could be, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Answer
If you did not have your ball fit with the Gadget on, this is the cause of your pain and blistering. Wearing the wrist device will require you to shorten the span on the ball. One thing you could try, if you use finger inserts with the lifts, try going to ovals. This may shorten the span enough to keep you from having to plug the ball.
