Three year old bowler

Question
I have a three year old son who is really into bowling.  I take him bowling three to four times a week.  The pro shop owner and the alley workers rave about how into it he is.  Is it to early for me to get him some real lessons? He uses the two handed style, and can spin the ball.  Thanks for any help you van give me.

Answer
Mark,
A child as young as yours doesn't have a long attention span. My experience with kids would suggest that his exposure to the sport is fun and an adventure. If you create a structure and remove the fun, he may soon tire of "lessons".

My youngest student was around 7 or 8, and the constant reinforcement needed improved her because she became motivated to knock pins down, because a best friend also bowled and it became a contest. Your son just enjoys being with you, and doing something new. Let him grow in the experience and see how he develops. Today's two handers didn't have instruction, their styles were unheard of. The industry is just now getting some data on how the two handed delivery works and how it can be duplicated.

I'd suspect your son loves to bowl (because you do), so let him enjoy his fun and grow with the experience he's getting. Size, athleticism, and motivation will effect how he develops in the sport. In a couple years, the repetition he's getting now will create the muscle memory and muscle development for a personal style, that then can be augmented with some professional instruction to polish and improve him. For the time being he is doing what his body is allowing him to do, trying to mold his body to perform a specific set of movements could be damaging or counter productive. (Initial investigation of some of the sports two handed players have found significant strain to back, knee's and other joints.)

Thanks for the questions. Enjoy your son's interest, encourage him, and let him have fun.
