More info on turning the ball with my thumb
Question
None of the above are problems. I have a some what moist hand, I track high(close to the fingers and thumb), my thumb hole isn't too loose but a little bit snug, and my fingers are long.
Thank you,
Sean
Answer
Sean,
High track could be low axis rotation, but you said your axis rotation was 45 degrees, could it be 15 degrees?. If the track is high, you're not turning the ball much (with anything, fingers or thumb) potentially. A more forward rolling ball won't hook a lot but will hook early. Depending what the tilt is, a more end over end roll won't give you the power and effect downlane that you're looking for. How did you determine the axis rotation?
Snug hole, tacky hand and long fingers are harder to get out of the ball. You might not be exiting the ball as clean as you could. Callousing probably is occurring trying to get the ball off your hand. You don't have a long span, hard to have long fingers. Some of what you mention doesn't add up.
What kind of training does your coach have? Good bowler from the area, or certification from USBC, IBPSIA, or other? You're young, and bowl well, but are worrying about turning the ball with your thumb? What's the ball doing that doesn't work for you? What ball? What kind of layout?
You might be chasing something that is not the issue, but a symptom of something else.
