ANSWER: Hi Joe. It is necessary to apply lift "only" if "the release" you are using, requires you to deliver the ball that way. The "why" part is simply to direct the rotation of the ball.
The "release" you are using is the key. You may be using lift to get a different ball reaction. Lifting the ball in a forward roll like Mika Koivuniemi, or some of the others on the PBA tour players is a great asset. If lift is a normal entity of your shot, then be consistent with it. For many, using lift with their release feels just right. Like any muscle movement it has to be practiced until it is a natural thing for you to use. Doesn't matter if its on a regular basis, or just a part of conquering the lane conditions.
In summary Joe, lift applies to the release you are using. It can be a natural part of your game, or an adjustment which can uses many physical parts of your fingers, hand, and arm. There are many situations or adjustments I site in my new book that can be considered when lanes are too wet, too dry, or when your ball is just not communicating with the lane conditions. This is the opportunity to try lift in the release, or decrease the amount of lift, so your ball will clear the heads, or perhaps read the lanes sooner. Thanks for your question Joe. Knowing the release we are using on the lanes will allow us to get to the pocket in great shape. Our efforts to label our release, is paramount to scoring well. Thanks for allowing me to answer your question.

QUESTION: Lift is not a normal entity of my shot. My kind of release is a free arm swing, then push and a good follow through that often times I touch the back of my shoulder. I was hitting the pocket and yet I always leave one pin and often times the seven or the ten. My ball lay out is skid and flip, will an early roll lay out delivers a better pin action.

Joe, thanks for the feedback! I hope that you would read my article to Calvin about 10 pins. I give several scenarios in my new book about what is going on when you leave corner pins. It sounds like your releases creates an ample amount of skid for your ball, however we have to ask, "is it too much sometimes and not enough at other times." Double edged sword? You betcha! So much depends on the oil volume, the oil length, ball cover and more. I love how my book out lines the things you can do to adjust.
Sometimes, just adjusting your ball cover from night to night can give you an edge no one else consistently utilizes. When you are able to do this you join the ranks of the advanced bowlers who take charge of their game instead of leaving it to chance every night of league bowling. Take care, bowl well!
