QuestionI get really confused when it comes to loft, and whether or not it's a good thing, and when to use it. Can you please help?

Greetings Zoe, as you know it is situational. It depends on your speed, the surface of the ball, and how far down the lane the oil pattern extends. Some layouts are more effective with certain releases, which you learn through experience. Lastly the oil volume down lane itself. Patterns like the shark and kegel patterns can use a reverse buff which will provide a hold or skid area down lane.
For long patterns loft is okay if you have reverse bluff down lane which provides a hold or skid spot for your ball. Lofting will allow your ball to start up at a particular distance down lane instead of moving from it's preferred axis spin point too soon if you land the ball too early on a drier front end.
Likewise,if the heads are very oily and you don't want the ball to stay in its preferred axis spin point too long, you can step up on the approach and shorten the lane with loft and a slower speed to allow the pin to move after the ball lands on the lane.
Not many bowlers possess the skill set to play longer patterns. My new book gives many adjustment tips you can try. Many pros avoid longer patterns because it truly is not their cup of tea, and they know this. You should always play to your strengths. When you want to be the best, it does not mean give up on "trying" to master something you are not good at. Experience is the best teacher most times.
In summary Zoe, lofting on long patterns is okay. However, you must consider elements like dry heads, high oil volumes, reverse buff, ball preparation, ball layout, your personal speed and revs. When you see the ball begin to hook and then go straight at the backend and possibly hook again, you definitely have found the reverse buff area. Lofting may allow your bowling ball to create just enough traction to bite through the reverse buff and continue in its hook direction to the headpin.
To be playing longer pattern Zoe you must be advancing your game. Stick to it. I admire bowlers who don't mind asking for a little assistance. It shows character and determination to kick some butt on the lanes. Be well and bowl well! New Zealand, wow, hope to travel there one day!
