Hello James, I sell a HELP CARD for bowlers entitled "Bowling Coach in the Bag!" It list approximately 15 items you can try. It tells you how to make the ball go longer on one side of the card. On the other side of the card it tells you how to make the ball hook sooner. With all adjustments you have to pick out what adjustments work for you and which ones don't.
Adjustments includes changing the surface of the ball, lofting the ball, different hand positions, how to change your ball speed, raising the ball in your approach stance, etc...
In summary James, you have to change something. The ball and the lanes have to talk to each other less, to allow your ball to travel further before hooking. Increasing the speed of the ball is helpful, you do that by walking faster, or swinging the ball faster if it helps. Counter to that, if you do not grab the ball at the bottom of your swing hard, the ball may go further down the lane because there is less of a force of revs on the ball to create traction while at the same time managing a free swing that has speed enough to create skid. Finding what works for you is truly trial and error.
I wrote my book, True Bowler Adjustments, to answer these questions for every bowler. Doesn't matter what your bowling knowledge level is concerning making adjustments.
I wish you all the best and I hope you will find that recipe for you. Always be mindful that your pro shop or ball driller can help you with the reaction of your bowling ball.
If you bowl on conditions at one house which is drier than you like, don't hesitate to seek your ball driller's guidance.
They often know what you are facing and can recommend a bowling ball change if needed to extend your shot.
James, not many bowlers know much about their Positive Axis Point. If conditions are such that you ball hooks too much all the time, it may be pinned in a high RG position that forces an early hook and roll of your ball just before the head pin, or likewise if your bowling ball is pinned in your strong RG position 3 3/8th from your PAP position it may be moving even more violently after it comes out of the oil. No bowler should have to fight all night to try to get the ball further down lane every week. If this seems like what you are doing. Let your ball driller know what's going on and see if you can get him or her in your corner.
