QuestionWhat will give me the most hook in a bowling ball? A 1 inch pin or a 4 inch pin? For the top weight the same question, 1 oz or more oz? i throw around 18-19 mph and more of a cranker i guess you call it and really have trouble finding a ball to hook on oily lanes and would like to know if any of that will help my situation. I get lots of revs on the ball but i have so much speed that it doesnt have to time to react

Hello Wesley, the most hook in a bowling ball is awesomely based on many factors that will allow the "surface of the ball" to interact with the lane. When you constantly over throw the pattern, the ball skids as you know. In my new book, True Bowler Adjustments, I write, " as long as a ball is skidding and hooking, it has virtually no surface contact and it can be deflected." In effect it often doesn't do you a dayum bit of good... Too much speed or spin, in most cases, without the proper balance of "surface" are often the cause of deflection.
To answer your other questions, a 4 inch pin out will "flare" more than a 1 inch pin. So, a 1 inch pin will provide more control and be more stable in it's roll overall.
The more top weight on a bowling ball the more length you "may" get, considering two balls are basically of the same make up and type. What you are looking for is a "difference" from one bowling ball to the next, which is what we all strive for so we can adjust quicker to what is going on. If possible, get your pro shop professional involved if you intend on purchasing a new ball this holiday season. Knowing details like your Positive Axis Point (PAP), oil conditions, how you release the ball, along with other details will make fine tuning the ball and selection much easier.
Thanks for your questions. Please be safe! Happy holidays!
