Lane conditioning league vs open play

Question
Gary, First I would like to thank you for all the great knowledge you provide on this board. I have read your book twice and
am now keying in on specific subjects for more study.

My wife & I bowl in a first shift 5 man team league. The house sets a 38 ft THS for league as well as on weekends for open
play.We have noticed that our balls just straighten out when in league.  We both play in the track area, me maybe a hair left but those are just preferences. In league we both move out to the 7 board as well as move our feet right to have a more direct angle to the pins. I spend the entire night there even with 10 people on the lane.

On weekends, we can play our normal angles where we are more comfortable and score much better and we ask for fresh lanes. I had a 190+ ave that has plummeted to the 160s.

I have talked to both owners of the house and the say they use the same pattern and only change it for tournaments.  They allude to humidity changes. Hmmm, so now I have to bring a barometer and hygrometer to bowl league?

We both are strokers, low revs with medium speed. My wife is a slower speed. She uses an Avalanche solid, me a Reign of Fire or Erase-it; plastic for right hand spares. My Reign of Fire even at 800 grit is almost a straight ball.

Also, I will be working with a coach hopefully in the next couple weeks to deal with some other issues. It's a 3 hour drive since we are isolated here on the CA north coast, but I am passionate about my game.

I haven't taken time to show you our layouts but can be a followup if requested. Your thoughts and feedback are greatly appreciated.

Bob, Thank you for your compliments about my book. I love being on www.AllExperts.com to lead bowlers in the right direction for their game. I love the way you commented that you had read my book twice, and now was focusing on specific areas. "That truly is the point to my book!" It's not a novel, so those looking to read it from cover to cover often go... "huh?"  I am military minded. So if you need to know how to blow sump'n up! Look in the manual under "blow'n crap up!" and you should find your answer, bam! My book is written just like that. If a bowler knows they have release issues, look under "release." If they think they have timing issues, or want to know how to use their eyes, then "Timing" and "Using your eyes" are listed for the bowler. I try to make it easy.
Bob, I could give you a million reasons for changes in conditions or whether one league is playing different from another league. However, you already have that answer. There is a difference. Where it comes from I cannot say. Our job is to conquer it. I make a living analyzing positive axis points (PAP's) and tweaking the bowling ball to get my bowlers squarely into the pocket with their favorite bowling balls on their league shots. Some of my bowlers bowl three different houses and they use different bowling balls for one house and leave other bowling balls at home.
On the weekend with open play more oil may be uses because of the unskilled bowlers who come in. The extra oil may help you get to the pocket, while the league shot may be a lesser volume of oil "same pattern" to provide consistency from night to night that you play.
In summary Bob, they may only oil once on the weekends with a higher volume of oil to protect the lanes. Then on your league night, that "same pattern" may be adjusted to a lower volume oil setting, catered more to league conditions. Yes, it's a play on words but the volume of oil, or the length of oil may be different, but the pattern itself may not change at all. They are not lying, they are simply saying what they know to be true. One setting on the machine may be slightly different but basically the same. Just the mere mention that they are able to "change" the pattern for tournaments eludes to the fact that they do have the capability on their machine. An expensive machine for that fact.
If you have two bowling balls that are laid out differently. It is a fair statement that one of them may work on one condition, and the other may work on the other "different" condition. :-)
This is where you focus with "your eyes" and make note of what pins you are leaving on the weekends, or particular time that you play. Verses, your league shot and where you like to play from on the lanes as you have stated. Knowing what pins you are leaving will allow a guy like me to "tweak" the roll of your bowling ball and get you in the pocket more often on the conditions you prefer, provided you do have consistency to your release. Keep in touch. Happy Holidays!!!
