ring finger drilled higher than middle finger
Question
I recently had a ball drilled with the ring finger higher than the middle finger.why would a pro shop do this and will it cause any injury? They said it will help play the inside of the ball and help control.Have not thrown it yet but looks like thats how they drilled balls a long time ago.I have had over 30 balls drilled by them and this is a first.
Answer
Keith,
Typically, the distance from thumb to ring is from 1/16 to 5/16 longer than thumb to middle finger. So, it "looking" higher maybe because it is higher. My span has my ring about an 1/8 shorter than my middle finger span. So, typical isn't everyone.
In my experience, making the ring longer will cause an over rotation and a lower track without a major pitch adjustment in the finger pitches.
Please roll the ball before you decide it won't work. Chances are it won't if you don't think it will. After 30 bowling balls (what may be just an optical illusion with the holes and label), you're second guessing the drill? Did you get a fit change? An updated fit every couple years is a good idea.
The span change may be an attempt to create less axis rotation, but I'm just guessing. Roll the ball, let me know what you find out. Thanks for the question.
