QuestionI'm a "backup" bowler who's been bowling for 2 years. I recently started using reactive balls (Midnight Vibe and Hammer Infection). I roll my ball straight and allow the ball to "move" as it should. My husband tells me that in order to get the most out of the ball and to increase my chances of getting strikes, I need to "hook" the ball. I am not comfortable with this; however, I agree with him. I've tried it a couple of times but 90% of the time my ball finds it's way to the gutter. Can you offer any tips and/or ideas on how I make this adjustment?

Hi Cindita, it all depends on whether you are trying to hook your back up ball, or whether you are trying to deliver the ball from the same side of the lane your hand should be throwing the ball from. For example if you are right handed the ball should be moving from right to left. If you are left handed the ball should be moving from left to right crossing the lane to the head pin. This is a past post I answered. It may help you. http://en.allexperts.com/q/Bowling-1812/2010/3/ball-16.htm
Regarding the ball going into the gutter because you are trying to spin it. In my book "True Bowler Adjustments," one of the first things I warn bowlers about is trying to spin the ball in high oil, especially at the beginning of the game.
Please check out the post I wrote. It may help you understand a little better what is needed. Also, I have to ask, are you trying to hook the ball in the backup motion or do you want to switch to the normal delivery which will allow you to score more consistently and hook the ball with more accuracy? If so there is a post for hooking the ball, and staying behind the ball. They are both under my profile answers to bowling questions. If you are not able to move forward you can always e-mail me at
