track
Question
Hello, my style is stroker, and all my balls are drilled for high track, My stance begings with my middle finger at 6 o'clock and finish at 9 o'clock, for that kind of release the track of my ball is high, now I am trying to release with more rotetion, I start with my middle finger between 8 and 9 o`clock when the ball returns I see the oil ring on the ball and the track is now medium, my question, is a disadvantage to have balls with drilled layout for hihg track and release them with more rotation for mediun track? What can i do if I decide to perform that kind of release? Is it necessary to change the drill layout of my ball for a better reaction?
Answer
Carlos,
Layouts in a bowling ball should be based on the bowlers expected delivery axis. So, your equipment layouts are not optimum for your new release, but may not be detrimental.
I'm not sure what you mean by "drilled for high track." Can you explain further (do you know the layout details)?
Without being able to see you, and knowing more details of how you roll the ball, it's just a guess as to what's happening.
I'd seek to identify your Positive Axis Point (PAP)? your axis tilt and axis rotation? Find the ball track on your bowling balls? the position of the Pin? Label? Mass bias (if appropriate)?
Also, I'd attempt to determine what's the change of your PAP when you change the roll on the ball?
After everything else, I'd like to know the environment you bowl on (What kind of lane conditions (and lane surfaces) do you bowl on?).
Thanks for the questions. I'd suspect you are not seeing a huge change in how the ball is rolling. With more info I can suggest what you should expect, you can decide if anything major be done with your bowling equipment.
Initially, I'd suggest without a dramatic change in ball reaction, your delivery changes, while contributing the axis rotation change you want, the new PAP from the new delivery may lessen the effect of the current layout(s). Also, your delivery may not be improving your rev rate. Please provide as much additional information as you can. There are some simple fit changes (pitches) that can help you get around the ball easier.
If your current driller is using an equal and opposite pitch combination for your fingers, and the thumb pitch doesn't compliment how you want to roll the ball, you may be fighting your fit a bit, too.
