ANSWER: Hello Simon, based on the image, the bowling ball is asymmetrical. Asymmetrical balls with the pin placed above the fingers are more forward rolling (going longer down lane). Also, since the pin, or the big yellow dot is more than 2 3/4 from your Positive Axis Point (PAP), It will create a large track flare or violent reaction down lane.

The big yellow dot is also connected to the center of the ball. It is actually the end of the stem or shaft that comes out from the center of the ball. The small circle is the Center of Gravity, or static balance spot on the ball. The small yellow dot at the bottom by the thumb is the Mass Bias. This is a weighted aspect of the ball where it can be influenced to move or spin slow or faster as the ball travels down the lane. It is written, you can slightly control the shape of the ball travel on the back end. This weighted area is closest to the surface of the ball.

Looking at your ball travel, if the ball is going too long you may be able to make the ball roll and hook sooner by bringing "the pin"(big yellow dot) down and to the right. This will increase your side roll. Giving you and earlier roll to the pins. If possible you can talk to your ball driller about kicking the Mass Bias to the right just a little to give it more hook also.

Keep in mind that if you put to much weight to the right side of the ball you may have to put a weight hole in the ball to keep it legal. As a bonus, moving the Mass bias to the right will often give your ball a fresh surface to work with also.

Most importantly, if your ball is not working the way your want it to, you should try changing the surface of the ball first to get a stronger reaction, if needed.

Take care and bowl well.

QUESTION: What is large track flare?? How do the driller find my PAP when I didn't tell him it?? He did watch me throw a ball a couple of times?? So my PAP is 2 3/4 based on the picture I send you??

I was also thinking about buying a new ball?? How do I find PAP?? Or should I let the pro shop guy help me find it?? Do they charge for finding my PAP??
Also is it best for me to know my PAP to let them know before they help me drill a new ball?? Would my game score increase if he drilled the ball the way I want it and also drilled it by my PAP??

Thanks for your help again and get back to me ASAP. Thanks again!

Hi Simon, Track flare is the spacing between the ball tracks on your ball. It can be wide 3/4 of an inch or small only 1/4 of and inch. A driller will use these rings around your ball or the impressions to track how your ball is spinning as it comes out of your hand during delivery.

Since you have a ball driller that has seen you throw the ball and knows your PAP, you now have a potential partner to help you elevate your game. You should let the pro shop professional help you find a ball that will help improve your game.

One important thing to note. Your PAP is a starting point for your potential ball reaction. If you get tired, have an injury or if the lane conditions change you may change your release, which may change your PAP.  So don't get to hung up on your PAP.  What is most important is purchasing the right ball for the lane conditions in your particular bowling house.

Often PAP measurements are taken for bowlers who truly are consistent and repeat their shots time and time again. Often on varying conditions, various bowling balls, for various tournament play.

This general Pin, Cg, and Mass Bias, location may help get you a slightly different layout reaction. However you have to drill the ball first and throw it to see what reaction you will have from the ball.

Allow the pro shop operator to guide you and give him as much information as you can to assist him or her in the selection of a great ball.

.... And no, they don't normally charge for finding your PAP. :-)

Bowl well and take care Simon.
