10 pins

Question
I had a frustrating yet positive day in bowling yesterday 9/15/11. I was hitting the pocket with such aggression and yet by the end of my 3 games i ended up shooting a 590 due to the fact that i left 15...yes 15 ten pins. I missed the first one but i picked up 14 in a row so i am proud of that. (pause for applause)Thank you! Keep in mind i was late so i didn't get to practice. But the first ball i threw was perfect and i left a ringing 10. I play mostly the 2nd to 3rd arrow and i use a Virtual Gravity Nano. I didn't want to make any adjustments because i was attacking the pocket with ease. By the 8th frame of the 2nd game i had already left 9 ten pins. Not one turkey strike. Lots of doubles surrounded by 10 pins and a few 4's and 7's. I even moved left 2 boards, then 3 boards, same result. I knew the lanes were breaking down so i switched to my Virtual Gravity. (By the way my Nano is drilled for maximum hook out-of-box.) My VG is polished and drilled to go long with late hook. It allows me to play between the 2nd and 3rd arrow because i polished it. I was hitting the pocket so many different ways and although i did strike some, i still left 6 more ten pins. I sent messengers and no luck. I even saw 2 pins go toward the 10 pin and one went behind it and the other went in front of it. Ironically the date was Sept. 15th and that's how many tens i left...15. The most i ever left was 8 in a three game set. Should i just chalk it up to a bad day or could i have done something different? What would you have done? One time i threw the ball right through the nose and all the pins just got lazy and fell leaving the 10 pin. I avg 229 so bowling a 183,192,215 for a 590 is beneath my standards as a house bowler. By the way, i did get a turkey in the 3rd game but in the 9th and 10th frame i finished with 3 ten pins. Back in the day I used to get frustrated and miss some of those 10 pin spares but i am proud that i did convert 14 out of 15 of those 10 pins. The last 3 weeks i shot 698,723, and 726. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Looking forward to hearing your expert opinion. Do you feel my pain?

Demetrius, thanks for your question about 10 pins. How can you kick them out? The short answer is your ball has to have more traction to move left of the 3 pin if you are right handed. Most bowlers will know this. However, bowlers want to know concretely what is needed to do that. I won't blow smoke at you. It's about understanding a lot of variables from my perspective. Hand position, where you stand on the approach, the ball you have in your hand, etc.etc. etc. This exact question is asked to me 3 or 4 times a month. As a professional coach, I answer each question on a case by case bases. I normally charge a price to the customer because it takes a lot of investigating. I use this money to help the youth bowlers of my bowling center.
The answer can be different for many bowlers, but it basically involves getting the ball to move correctly on the lanes, ?not too early, not too late.  At your level of consistency you should be studying and perfecting the art of understanding the Radius of Gyration of the ball,  and the differential of the ball. This would seriously give you an edge over your competitors and help you to select equipment that will truly help you excel. Then again, sometimes just sanding or polishing the cover of the ball helps greatly. But the 搘hys? to each suggestion is what bowlers need.
These are only a few of the answers you may be familiar with. This is also why I wrote my book True Bowler Adjustments.  Here comes the gutt check part of my job as a coach also.  I help protect the game by 搉ot?giving the vultures of our sport a lot of information so they can pray upon others. I try to do this by guarding the secret to kicking out ten pins, as best I can. I will not sugar coat that fact.
The best in the sport, train, pay for classes, take lessons, and study to perfect their craft. There are a select "few" that come out and just match up with the right ball and lanes, and you can抰 say anything but, man they can bowl.  However, even if I told the world the secrets, they still have to go out and prove that they can translate the words into action. In my new book, True Bowler Adjustments, I share dozens of adjustments necessary to kick out the 10 pin. I also describe how a bowler can use their eyes to tell if the ball is hitting too high leaving the 10 pin, or hitting too low on the head pin, leaving the 10 pin. Many bowlers have had great success because of my book. I describe how bowlers can adjust their hand to carry the shot, or how you can move on the approach. In short, I can not list of the number of things you can do here on this forum because it would be too lengthy, and yet be incomplete.
Also, someone would take it out of context and site something written as the gospel of what to do to kick out the 10 pin. That would not be fair to me, and many coaches who make a living helping bowlers. Coaching is a business. Another aspect is "not" helping 搒andbaggers?spoil our sport. These are bowlers who 搘ork?to keep a high handicaps. Sandbaggers deliberately bowl low scores, so they can parlay their scratch scores to win.  It just would not be fair to other bowlers like you, who have put their time in, learning to be consistent. Many bowlers lack only a few pieces of the puzzle to consistently carry those 15 nine counts. However, there can be several solutions for any bowler.  Their adjustments are unique to that bowler and the centers they bowl in.
How to carry the 10 pin is probably the most sought after secret of the game. However, working the wrong aspect of kicking out the 10 pin can set a bowler back a few steps. The true answer lies within the bowling ball, the lane, the bowler, and getting the ball to move correctly.
The most awesome person who can help you with your own person aspect of pin carry is most likely your house pro, pro shop professional, certified coach, or my book. Start with the lane condition, and the ball. No matter where you bowl, these two are the most crucial factors in today抯 modern game, that I love!
In summary Demetrius, I could spout 10 different options for you to try in practice. I listed a few.  With such a high average you obviously need someone like me, (a coach) to help you in person. This person can give you the "whys" of each solution to identify if it will work on your lanes, and with your bowling ball. (Too much to do here!) Also, others who want that same information, may not be out to just increase their personal best scores. They may use the information to pray upon other bowlers. (This is not a good look!)  10 pins are mostly left on the deck by the ball going to far right of the head pin. Also, if the ball does hit near the pocket it gets deflected too much, Too much spin, not enough traction, or the ball is still in the hooking phase will just frustrate you. As, long as the ball is hooking or spinning, it can be deflected. Getting the ball to roll through the pins is key. The proper ball traveling phases are skid, hook and roll. Get that ball to 搑oll?through the pins sooner my friend. I know that feeling of being that close to finding a bowling solution!  Also concerning this issue of 10 pin carry you can check out my response to Calvin on 搇ane reading.?
