Back up Ball

Question
Hi Gary,

You don't know how excited I was to find someone talking about a back up ball and not saying it is a bad thing,  I am 54 years old and have thrown a back up ball forever.  We recently started bowling again after being away from it for several years.  I cannot seem to find the right ball.  I currently throw a 14 lb but am going to move up to a 15 lb that is what I threw when I stopped I used to throw a Columbia it was a Yellow dot the maroon one.  If that makes sense. Anyway I cannot find a ball that works well for me.  I currently have the Storm 2furious and it just isn't doing it. I am not getting pin carry at all.  Hope you can give me some pointers . thanks. Hello Cynthia! I am so glad to help if I can. To start, you had a certain look, or shape of your ball travel that the yellow dot gave you. It was predictable and smooth. Technically speaking, this High RG, yet low differential symmetrical core was very readable for you.
Duplicating that in todays game is not difficult but it involves knowing how the 2furious is really treating you on the lanes. My question when a bowler speaks of not carrying often comes down to the simple facts of knowing, "is the ball hooking too early, or is it going too long and leaving you 7 pins most of the time?"
A ball like the yellow dot has a flare potential that is low, the 2Furious has a pretty high flare potential, meaning that it may go further down the lane than you would like it to. I recommend storm, hammer, and brunswick products often. The Tropical Heat, the hammer green vibe, or the brunswick karma will allow your ball to move sooner on the lanes if the ball is going too long and leaving you a lot of 7 pins.
Best of all, these balls don't normally cost you an arm or leg. Later in the game you can use your 2Furious... just trust me on that one.
In summary Cynthia, the 2Furious is a great ball, however it has its time when it comes to lane transition and you must wait for that moment to happen when you see a 6 pin or a 8 pin pop up. Because of your style, drilling, and lane condition you may not be achieving good carry. Don't be frustrated. When you get the right arsenal that covers the short oil, medium oil, and the long oil, it's all gravy from then on. If you are going to invest in a new ball, do so, but do it to compliment your current bowling ball and fill the gaps.
Take care and may every 10th frame be filled with three strikes in a row!!!
