Greetings Bill, thank you for your question. You would like to know can a product like the ball spinner improve your game. The concrete answer is yes!!! Should you get a ball spinner yes!!! Consistency is what we are after in the world of bowling. I make this clear on the first informational page of my bowling book, TRUE BOWLER ADJUSTMENTS.
Going back through bowling history, many bowlers have learned to rely on a certain ball surface preparation(prep) to combat oil conditions. There is a huge lesson to be learned here because if your ball is in too much oil, and does not grab the lane soon enough, you can leave bucket spares, 2,4,5 or splits. Surface prep will always take priority when trying to bring the ball into the pocket!
As a pro shop staffer I change the surface for many of my customers from week to week until they find the correct surface for the condition they bowl on. Many of my customers will complain the ball hooks but just doesn't hook enough. They will also complain that they leave 10 pin after 10 pin. There are many ways to adjust to the lanes as I write about in my bowling book. However, the most advantageous adjustment often is having the ability to change the surface of your ball.
In the past changing the surface of your ball with a drill adapter, was all the rave, yet it was somewhat messy. Nowadays, you get a ball spinner, place a box container around it and you are in business!
Imagine, it's your league night. You go into the bowling center and you have a 500 grit prep on the surface of your ball. You leave the 6,10 pins mostly. You only average 170 or 180 per 3 game series because the ball is just too strong. The following week, you prep your bowling ball surface to 1000 and you leave mostly 10 pins. You average 190 because you picked up your spares. The following week you decide to use a 2000 prep on the surface of your bowling ball and bam!!! Just like that, you break the 200 glass ceiling for the evening... Sure you are still leaving a pin here and there, but you begin to string strikes. You don't work as hard to score and you get dialed in because you have a consistent surface on your ball all over as opposed to trying to do it by hand.
Thanks for your question Bill. This was a great one. Prepping the surface of your ball will always be key to consistent scoring. Along with wiping the ball off as it comes back to you on the ball return. Sometimes gunk gets on the ball and if you don't check your ball, or wipe it off after delivery, it can have nasty debris or substances on it that will change your reaction for the next delivery.
Keep striking Bill, and the best way to do it is to get a ball spinning. This way you'll have that consistent surface every time you go out to bowl.
