Hello Frankie, Since you are able to hit the pocket drilling is not a priority issue. Apparently, you like the look the bowling balls are giving you. Most high average bowlers have a tendency to throw a great ball, however they don't take into account the lane condition in the center where they are bowling.
For example, I bowl in 7 different bowling centers, with 60+ lanes, every two weeks. I have 6 bowling balls. I have learned that I am just as good as anyone out there, and just as consistent as the best out there, with one exception. The best in those houses bowl there every time and don't travel to other houses that much.
With that said, they prepare(prep) their bowling ball surfaces to skid more, or hook more, or to roll a lot sooner, or later down lane. If I go to a bowling center that is flooded and my bowling balls won't hook and roll soon enough, often I will stay after the league and practice one or two games.
During my practice I will work on my surface prep. This way if I have to come back to that center on another league night, I will have somewhat of an idea how the surface of my ball needs to be for that center.
Preparation of the bowling ball cover is the biggest influence to ball motion of all the factors in bowling adjustments. It truly is the difference between averaging 180 all night, or averaging 225+.
Just tonight,(high volume oil) I only had 4 opens in 36 frames of bowling. Just pounding the pocket! However, I did not shoot a 600 series. Again, after the league was over, I prepped the cover of my bowling ball correctly and shot 234, 258, 225. It was VERY EASY to REPEAT my shot on the very same pair of lanes I had just bowled on. "Who shoots a clean game for a 190? OMG, but it is a true story. The volume of oil was high and my bowling balls needed to have more traction/rougher surface on them.
Frankie, I truly want to challenge you to work on prepping surfaces of your bowling balls. It will increase your roll, get you out of the front end cleaner, even help kick out those corner pins if you get the right cover prep prior to each outing to bowl.
In summary Frankie, I know bowlers have favorite layouts, spin the ball, forward roll the ball, loft the ball, two hand the ball, throw the ball fast, or slow. I know they drift in their approaches, hop to the line, slide to the line, or just plant their slide foot at the line. All are different delivery techniques. I also realize bowlers bowl on different lane surfaces. There is no substitute for have the right ball prep on the cover of your bowling ball so you can match up to the lane conditions.
However, many like yourself, can hit the pocket no matter what but the ball may not get into a roll soon enough, it may also roll too early. In either case, you will be able to tell the difference in your pin carry if you can alter the surface of the ball. If you leave a lot of 7 pins it may require a ball change and surface adjustment. If you leave a lot of 10 pins, you may require a surface change and a move either front to back, or left to right.
Keep in mind, you can not alter the surface of any of your bowling balls once you have thrown your first ball of league play. Best of luck to you Frankie. Hopefully, you may find my new bowling book to be quite helpful, because I tackle a lot of these situations and also show you how to watch the bowling ball to string strikes. Take care and God's Blessings to you.
