spinning the ball
Question
Warren, I have been bowling since I was 3, and took 10 years off due to pain in my wrist and elbow. When I returned to the game 2 years ago, I realized that I am now spinning the ball. My track is very low and it use to be near my fingers. Even though I am averaging in the 200s and had a 300 game I just not comfortable and I have a callus on the inside of my thumb on the joint. I think I might be squeezing the ball because sometimes I hang and pull the ball across my body. I keep saying its my pitches but I now think it might be just me. I need help. Thank you Joe
Answer
Joe,
Are you using balls that you had from 10 years ago? An old fit might be the issue.
On the other hand, a new fit, if it's significantly different from the previous fit (your muscle memory still wants to roll the ball like you did 10 years ago), might be causing you to actively need to "let go" forcing you around the ball, late, in the delivery. The pulling across the body result sounds like fit issue too.
Does the ball just hang in your hand, when held at your side with arm and hand relaxed? If not, you are squeezing the ball and causing the yanked shots. If your hand is flat across the ball, and there are no points of abrasion (callous, redness, blister, pain) your span and pitches might be fine. Hole size, if too small or too large could cause more active grip pressure. Does your hand shrink or swell as you bowl?
Are you trying to play differently than previously? Trying to throw harder? slower? Hook it more? Less? Has your equipment forced you to a part of the lane that's not as comfortable? Let me know, and I can try to help. Thanks for the question. Let your teammates and friends know, I'm looking to help frustrated bowlers. Good bowling.
how do i tell if my bowling ball is a collectors item?
