PAP

Question
Hi Gary  I've had a Brunswick Monster Frenzy for 10 years and I like it a lot. As I read tech stuff about bowling I wonder if I could do better. I am confused about PAP location being important in deciding how to drill a ball. I can probably find the PAP in current ball but how does the pro shop driller find it on a ball(s)I might buy? I can't throw an undrilled ball can I?? Can my PAP be the same for every ball I might roll?
     Thanks for your help!         John

Hello John, I'm sure that Monster Frenzy has been a real love of your life on the lanes. October of this year will mark it's 10 year anniversary. The core and cover of that ball is awesome. In fact, I found similar Differential numbers that your ball has, combined with a low RG effect that your coverstock provides. I listed them below for you. Back to the Frenzy...
Most bowlers like the "look" that this ball gives. It basically has that skid/snap affect that captures a bowlers attention and makes them say, " hey, I want my ball to react like that!"
Often times, when we get into the technical side of bowling, we go fishing for the key elements that make our bowling balls do what they do. The first part of that equation is getting the right bowling ball for the condition in the first place.
Imagine 10 years ago, maybe you weren't remotely interested in the technical aspects of the ball. Like most people, someone either recommended the ball, you saw it during league, or at a demo, or the pro shop staffer that sold it to you, just "felt" you could not go wrong with the Frenzy.
Now, 10 years later you want to do better. I would have to ask you, what do you need the ball to do, or what is it not doing for you?
In today's modern game, you can often use "one ball" on a house shot. If you get the right ball, you may only move two or three boards all night. When the condition changes, you may be fishing around trying to kick out the 5 pin, the 7 pin, or the 10 pin.
Also, if your ball becomes stronger during play, you may be leaving the 4 pin, the 4/9 combination, the 9 pin, or the 8 pin. (All based on right handed bowlers)
Regardless, you are either looking for a ball to be stronger than the Frenzy, or a ball to be a little weaker than the Frenzy during play. Just that quick John, we are suggesting two more bowling balls.
Still, we haven't talked about your Positive Axis Point or PAP. PAP's are based on a sustainable and consistent release. If you have one ball, you will often alter your release based on the lane condition, or where you are standing.
If it is oily, you may move outside. If drier, you may move inside. Regardless of the move, you will often change how you deliver the ball which will change your PAP.
In short, one lane you may spin the ball, the next lane you are forward rolling it. Today's game and technology will allow you to choose a new weapon and basically stay in the same area, with a different ball for the change in the condition. This will truly allow you to deliver the same PAP "type of release" you are familiar with, if you can afford additional bowling balls.(Which we know are not cheap these days!)
As far as your PAP, we ask customers to get a low flaring ball and throw it. With it's oil rings, or visible tracks, the pro shop staffer can find your PAP. Most will ask you to do it with your spare ball. However, the intent of the test is to get a ball that is "in a low flaring drill" lay out. For most people this is above or below the bridge between the fingers.
What would help also is to know "literally" that it is truly a low flaring ball. This will often be stated on the box that it comes out of! :-)
This way you have the right ball in your hand to get close to your PAP when bowling with a reactive resin ball. Especially if you are drilling for your particular bowling center. To answer your question....no John, you won't be throwing undrilled anything okay! :-)
As far as your PAP being the same for every ball you throw, it will be so only if you use the same release, often from the same general area you like to stand on the approach. As we move across the lanes on the amateur level it is very unlikely we will keep the same release/PAP.
That's okay though. We only have to be close to the same release, lay down spot, and break point at the back end. If we have the right ball for the condition, i.e. Monster Frenzy,Brunswick, Frantic(Storm), Grape Vibe(Hammer)Which I highly recommend as replacement ball for your Frenzy. Lastly, you can get the DV8's Hell Raiser Revenge, OMG, what a ball. I say what a bowling ball, because I look a the numbers on the bowling balls and the cores, as well as what I personally see from their performance with my eyes.
In summary John, PAP and technicalities are great, but you have to have someone to explain it to you. Can't do that for yah, it's just too confusing in this forum. As I have said though, getting the right ball first for your condition is the key to other bowling balls for you. If your condition is dry, medium, or oily where you bowl, you truly want someone who understands the look you have on your current ball.
That look can be created on another ball that will give you length and response, or early roll if that is needed. This is done today not necessarily through drilling, but most importantly, getting the right ball for the change in the condition.
Stay focused on that, you will succeed, trust me. Today if a player is throwing only one ball, he or she truly is on a house shot. Nothing wrong with that at all.
However, if you are on more oil in one house, and less oil in another, you will need a couple of "different" bowling balls for sure. If you have a great drill pattern, slap it on something different, see if you like it. God's Blessings to you! Bowl great John!- Coach
