Drilling - bit
Question
QUESTION: Warren - I operate a small shop out of my garage - mostly for personal use. Im having some issue with driling out the thumb hole on a couple balls. I used the 1 3/8ths bit to drill out for a thumb slug. Both times, the hole has wallowed out a bit at the top of the hole and is fine near the middle to bottom. I have had the bit resharpened thinking that might be the issue - it has helped "slightly" as the wallowing isnt nearly as bad as before. But it still occurs. I have to mention the press I'm using is a much older press (and is new to me) - I have checked it closely and can find NO wobble in the mechanism at all. I checked with the previous owner who stated he did not have these issues when he owned it. I'm a bit stumped - Can you offer any suggestions as to what is causing the wobble/wallowing?....James
ANSWER: James,
The bit carves too big a hole at the top?
Helping what sounds like an unlicensed, untrained business operator is not what this forum is about. Who taught you to drill?
Sorry with no real information, I won't guess. You may want to get some training, the pro shop association (IBPSIA) is in Texas. Thanks for the question.

QUESTION: Warren for the record, I am trained, however not by IBPSIA - been drilling since 1992. (no, I didnt take offense to the statement but wanted to clarify that I do know what I'm doing in a pro shop). This just happens to be the first time Ive run across this issue...
Anyway, I apologize for posing this question on the forum - I was under the impression that the experts here ran pro shops as well as offering advice, coaching and such - given that, I assumed you folks may have run across this problem before. evidently, I was mistaken.
Sorry for the bother and Thanks again for your time.
James
Answer
Thanks Jim,
I do operate a pro shop and write for Pro Shop Operator magazine. But this forum is for bowlers. So, info about why your drill bit is doing what it is doing, this is not the ideal place for trade info or exchanges.
Sharpen the bit, drill slower and send me a check. Good luck.
