Ball always comes in high
Question
Hello! My question is simple, and I'm hoping the answer is too! Why does my ball always come in high in the 1-3 pocket, several times coming right on the head pin?
My general shot is lining up with the dot to the left of the center dot, rolling over the second arrow, and in to the 1-3 area. I understand the idea of "if you miss left move left", but sometimes I find myself moving so far left that either A, I instinctively yank the ball to prevent it from going in the gutter, or B throw the ball with such a sharp angle that it does end up in the gutter.
I've managed to maintain a 180 average because I'm pretty good at getting spares, but I'd love to be able to put some strikes together.
I've tried everything I know, moving left, throwing the ball faster, even positioning my thumb at 1'oclock like I'm shooting the tenpin, but with the same results. Please help!
Answer
Hi Jason, like many others you are experiencing the next level of bowling. It's a simple question, true. But its gets complicated very quickly. What to do to adjust to extreme lane conditions? Those are often conditions with a distance of less than 35 feet or conditions greater than 42 feet. Technically speaking, having the right equipment in your hands is where you have hit a wall.
I can only suggest that you get equipment that is lower flaring than what you currently have. It will allow you to get further down the lane prior to having that violent reaction you are experiencing.
As a coach and author of the bowling book, TRUE BOWLER ADJUSTMENTS, I present to you countless other solutions you can try that may help you be more consistent and get you past the 180 ceiling to the 200 mark. What you really need Jason is a set of eyes on you. Someone to evaluate what is going on with your game. Someone who can look over your shoulder and say directly to you that it's "you," or it's your "equipment." These are the only real changes you can make.
If I had to put my finger on it, you could perhaps be spinning the ball down the lane. Spinning the ball adds to the aggressiveness of a high flaring ball. This coupled with a drier lane condition will cripple a bowler's game. You may even see less athletic, or lower average bowlers doing extremely well. The key to bowling is to get the ball to roll through the pins. Bowlers who can roll the ball, often do extremely well on all patterns. This is accomplished by staying more behind the ball at delivery.
As a professional coach I urge you to talk with your pro shop staff and see if they can help get you the equipment required for today's modern game. It often consist of #3# bowling balls that will allow you to advance your play on the lanes. Each bowling ball will require a layout that will give you length and back end play, allow you to play inside, and once the pattern is broken down, you will be able to continue to compete or have fun bowling, without worrying if the bowling ball will over react.
In summary Jason, ball travel has many variables. The ball, the bowler, the lane, and the bowler's delivery technique. My book is 110 pages, but it is well worth it to purchase. No where else will you get answers to you most pressing questions about bowling. I talk about the ball and the delivery technique of the bowler.
I urge you to get a coach to watch you. Next to that, a pro shop professional would have to come out and view your game also. Take my suggestions, and tell one of these professionals what is going on with your game and get them to take a look at you on the lanes. You will get your solution! God's blessings to you! -Coach
