Has Bowling been made to easy?
Question
Has the house shot that is used really help bowling or hurt league bowling. It has changed so that bowlers who would have been 170 are now 200 and 200 are now 230 and 215 are now pushing 240. It makes 800 happening even more often than 700 used to happen. Is this really good for bowling. The increase cost of bowling and the bigger differences in scores seems to have made the lower average bowler feel totally out classed. Yes handy capes help some but they do not even out the results.
The newer lane conditioning equipment also affects the scores. Bowlers do not have to hunt to find a shot like they used to. I have heard bowlers complain the shot was different and they had to move a couple of boards ?the lanes were in bad shape. All this helps the good bowlers scores go up but makes the lower score bowlers feel like this is to difficult and expensive so why bother. I have heard several tell me something similar to what I have written. Even the short shots are easier than the lanes used to be. Are there any discussion that this really the case?
Answer
Art,
Cosnsitency of lane conditions really got the ball rolling.
There has been discussions but no changes, yet organized bowling has lost 10 million + players in the last 15 years. When no-one shows up because everybody averages 220 or players just cheat as I've seen a lot of these days, bowling is 2,000,000 strong (the largest participation sport in the world) and dying.
The independent center owner fears what someone else might do and what effect it might have on their business, so they cheat first. I've only found a VERY few real leaders in the industry. Choosing a direction and sticking to it. So many just try to outdo the guy down the street (to the point years ago, of rampant lane blocking/cheating). Easy lanes became so prevalent that the ABC, et al gave in to the madness and now the entire industry "offers" a house shot that even blind bowlers have rolled 300 on.
It is no longer a sport, so much as a recreation. I enjoy sport leagues, and that may be where a very small number of bowlers end up, but I've met a lot of bowlers, and I don't believe they will readily give up the "easy." Push for more challenging lane conditions so you and others can get better and someday proprietors might listen. Thanks for the comment.
