Greeting Kurt, Thanks for today's bowling question! In my bowling book "True Bowler Adjustments" I site several reasons for missing your target. - Right eye/Left eye dominance, thumbs too loose,(use tape), trail leg spinning too far to the inside where it pulls the body around, hips never closing back to the foul line, lane heads too dry, bowling ball too heavy, bowling ball rolls too soon, hand release position too weak for the bowler, hand to the outside of the ball, bowler not balanced to post the shot, bowler falls off too often at the line, bowler pops up or raise up at the foul line,  bowler's non-ball shoulder pops during delivery, bowler's upper torso pivots inside, and then there is the bowler's swing itself.
Is the swing straight back and forth, or does it loop to the outside going back and then dive to the inside towards the head pin(not their target) at release?  Does the bowler's trail leg shoe exhibit wear on the big toe or inside of the foot?  This wear shows the foot points to the outside on the power step. If so the hips will be stuck back and away from the foul line...
As a USBC Silver Coach with 20+ years of experience and countless hours on the lanes watching bowlers of all ages and abilities miss the second arrow again and again, you will understand why your question may be a little difficult to answer. :-) However, this is why I accepted the challenge to write my book. This is why I wanted to do what no one had done before... Talk about how to make "adjustments" to your game!
Kurt obviously, my first recommendation is to get a USBC Certified coach to assist you in your efforts to find the root cause of your missing your target. All of the above, are truly areas that have to be investigated during a practice session. Yes, it is a lot to look at. Yes, that is why we(Coaches) get paid the big bucks! (Right... ;- )
Anyway, often it's a process of figuring out in short order, what improves your targeting. After so many years of seeing this obviously, I have a beginning process that helps, but after that it can be a number of the things that I have listed above.
First Kurt, check your ball fit. You can not out throw a bad ball fit."Never!" - 80% of your ball fit is your span. 40% for the  ring finger span, 40% for the middle finger. 20% of your fit is your pitches. Your ball driller needs to check your span. Your coach needs to check your span and your body! Together, they'll ensure you have the best fit possible. Once you have a proper fit, give yourself to the coach. Mind you, some bowling balls will grab the lanes early, and  move early. Solid bowling balls with drier heads may do this.
For the most part, I have seen the "release" and the "body language" screw up the majority of bowler. Keep in mind, "ball fit" comes FIRST! Also, keep in mind, having two targets is way better than just one target. Dot to the arrows, to the range finders down lane even.
Thank you for sharing with me. Don't get frustrated Kurt. There is a solution! For you, and every bowler out there...but it's personal for every bowler !!!
That means, you need someone right there with eyes on you....to help you figure it out. God's blessings to you this Easter and everyday Kurt! Git'er done!!!-Coach.
