I have a pearl cover stock with 4000 grit on it. Is this considered agressive finish in terms of the numbers? If I needed to get some more traction what would you recommend doing. Thank you.

Balls are aggressive because of the combination of cover and core dynamics.

Most pearl bowling balls skid because of the nature of the cover veneer. The smoother that veneer is prepared the longer a ball might slide. 4000 is the smoothest grit the manufacturers admit to using. Most pearls are finished with a polishing compound or a polish. To achieve the reaction a manufacturer may finish the ball very smooth, like 4000, and polish it. Some use slightly rougher cover preparation and a compound that also smooths the ball, as its being finished.

If your pearl ball needs to slow down a little sooner try 3000 grit, or 2000. The smaller the grit, the rougher the surface (smoothest to roughest: 4000, 3000, 2000, 1500, 1000, 800, 500, 360, 180, 120, 80).
