how do I improve my footwork and vertical leap
Question
I had knee surgery months ago because of a torn ACL and I have just finished my therapy. I've been playing for a two weeks now and I seem to have a problem on my lateral movement and leaping ability. Another thing is that I am often caught flat-footed on defense. Please tell me what drills could help me. thanks..
Answer
Hello aldrich!
Wow, ACL huh? That hurts just thinking about it. How old are you? If you are young and still growing, I'd say consult a Doctor about what you should be doing. If you're old like me(43), then jump rope and run. Jumping rope is the single best excercise you can do to help build stamina, strength, and agility. Then run on it to build back muscle and flexibility. Flexibility is what you need. Just remember to stretch really good.
It used to be said back when I played, "No pain, no gain". Now it's stated, "Pain, no brain". Just remember that you are coming off an injury and slow progress is OK.
Also, check with your physician and therapist to see just how much and what you should be able to accomplish now.
Good luck! Mark Berrier
