Teaching Curriculum at the Pre-highschool level
Question
Is there a basic teaching curriculum that coaches should be following at the pre-highschool level to teach/prepare them for the college/higher level sport?
Answer
Use the KISS method. Keep it Sake & Simple!
Kids need solid fundamentals for individual skills. Things like being able to dribble and make layups with both hands.
Another example of a sometimes forgotten fundamental to teach is shooting off the backboard inside of 10 feet.
Player should be taught proper technique individually, like defensive closeouts and proper helpside positioning, and then shown how to apply/use these things within the concept of team play.
If they are taught these skills and concepts at an early age, they will then have a better opportunity to shine at the high school level, or even make to the collegiate level.
There are lots of books and videos to learn from, but nothing beats working with a succesful local college coach, or high school coach, who might be able to answer your questions by allowing you to observe what they do in practice to develop fundamentals.
Also try the American Sport Education Program's "Coaching Youth Basketball" book/video program - it's a bluprint for coaches to learn how to teach every aspect of the game!
