Strategy
Question
Hi. My team is made up of mainly middle sized players, so when we come up against a team with a dominant big man we really struggle with rebounds and containing his scoring. Is there any strategies that would help my team find a way around this problem?
Answer
Hi Brendan,
There are different ways to defend a bigger player. You can play a zone and double-team the big man every time he gets the ball. You would play behind him with your post and double down with a guard. What I prefer, is playing man and pressuring the ball so it is not easy to enter the ball to the post. We have been successful fronting the big man, pressuring the ball, and making sure we were in good- proper help position. If they do get him the ball our post defender recovers to proper defense position between him and the basket with a body on him, then we double down with are guard so he cannot put the ball on the floor. We harass him so he cannot relax and get his rhythm. On rebounding, you do not have to be big to get a rebound. You have to box-out or like we say, back him out. Bigs hate to get a butt on there knees or hip. Be aggressive with them and try to take him out of there rhythm.
