To Late?
Question
Hello Mr. Muro:
I am an upcomming sophmore in highschool. I have never played basketball for real, but i'd like to start. I seem to be pretty good at it in gym. Im tall for my age and everyone always asks me if i play. I would like to be able to say yes. Our high school girls team is pretty bad, and they take almost any player they can get. Im pretty sure i could make the team, but I'd still like some advise. I'm very fast but im also very tall. I dont know which position i should play. How can i find out whats best for me? And what are some things i can do to improve my shooting? Also, how can i work on ball handling?
Thank you very much,
Briana
Answer
Hi Briana,
I am sorry for the delay in answering but I just got back from a tournament.
First of all let's establish what postion you should play. You write that you are tall for your age. Would you be the tallest on the high school team? If so, then you probably will play center, the "5 position.". If you are not the tallest they probably will play you at the big forward position or the "4 position." Positions are usually numbered so it's easier to teach and explain plays. The point guard is the "1 position", the shooting guard or off guard is the "2 position", small forward is the "3 position", the power forward is the "4 position", and the center is the " position."
The best way to improve your shooting and ball handling would be to ask a coach to help you with the correct techniques and then practice everyday this summer so you can make the team. I would think the high school coach would be eager to help you if they are not that good. A player like you, with size and speed can defintely help them. What makes you more valuable is your eagerness and willingness to learn. I would also ask the coach about defensive teqhniques as I believe that is the most important part of the game.
If you don't feel comfortable asking your high school coach for help you can see if there are AAU teams in your area. See if you can join one of the teams and you or your parents explain to the coach what your goals are. Do not get discoaurged if he or she says they dont need anyone right now, just go find another team until a coach says yes.
Good luck and let me know how everything works out. If you need more information write back and I will see if I can help some more.
