how to become a basketball scout
Question
I am currently in college taking my core credits so that I can transfer to a four year college. I have played basketball all of my life and know the ins and the outs. I feel that I have a talent of being able to identify exceptional players and because I love the game so much I have been thinking about becoming a scout. I dont think that would like to coach but scouting talent is something I would love to do. My problem is that I do not know what to do to become a scout or specific job details. I have been unable to find a good web sight or book that really explains the details of becoming a basketball scout. If you know of anything could you please email back, it would be greatly appreciated.
thank you
Answer
Hi Jarryd,
I think it is difficult to find information because most scouts are ex players or coaches that already have ties to the NBA. My suggetion would be to contact a couple of NBA teams and ask them what it would take to become a scout for them. This can help you choose your major that might help you get your foot in the door. You might have to start in the front office with another type of job and then work your way to scouting. I did find a site that says they help with becoming a scout but I don't know if they are on the up and up. You will have to read or contact them and decide if they are or not. In no way am I endorsing this site. I am just giving you what I found. Good luck and if I find anything else I will forward to you.
