specifics of a palming violation

Question
Hi,
How do you define a palming violation. The NBA rulebook isn't very clear on this. I'm having a problem because when I penetrate/drive, I usually put my hand directly  to the side of the ball where my middle finger is directly in the middle of the ball. Is this a palming violation?

Thanks,

Brian

Answer
Hi Brian,

Let's use the NCAA rule book instead of the NBA as most leagues go by there rules. Unless you are in the NBA? Read the rule below and then you have to ask yourself is the ball coming to rest in your hand or fingertips, if so then you are palming the ball according to the rules. Each ref is different and will call the game on how they see it so you have to get a feel for the ref and how he calls the game. Good luck!

A palming of the ball is a point of emphasis this year so informed referees are looking for palming and will be calling it more often then not.

The point of emphasis reads:

2. Palming (Illegal Dribble).
Since there has been no significant reduction in the frequency of illegal movements while
dribbling the ball, palming the ball is once again a point of emphasis.

a. "Palming" or "carrying" the ball places the defensive player at a distinct disadvantage
while according the dribbler a sizeable advantage inconsistent with the spirit and
intent of the rules. The dribbler, who during a high or hesitation dribble, causes the
ball to come to rest and then pushes or pulls the ball either to the side or in front of
him commits an indefensible violation which must be called.
b. "Palming" is an illegal maneuver. When the ball comes to rest in
the dribblers?hand, by rule, the dribble has ended. Continuing to dribble after the ball
has come to rest in the hand is a violation and must be called.
