carrying and traveling
Question
Hi. I have a question about carrying. How often do referees call it and when do they. Do they not call it if it isn't too bad? Also traveling, when does that get called in general, and when going up for a layup. Also is it considered traveling when I make a jump stop after dribbling and then go up for the shot? Because someone told me that that is not a jump stop, it is a pro hop and that is prohibited in high school leagues. My question pertains to high school ruling.
Answer
Hi Omar,
Violation calls like traveling or carrying the ball are called by the official at their discression. Most of the time violation calls have to do with advantage/disadvantage situations; meaning if an offensive player does something that gives them an advantage and puts the defensive team at a disadvantage they should always make the call. Carrying the ball is called less often than traveling I would say. Jump stops are not allowed in high school basketball. I hope that helps.
