Question on Official Basketball Rule
Question
My son and I are debating on a out of bounds call. If my son took a shot and missed. The ball was heading out of bounds. I was already standing out of bounds. He grabbed the ball inbounds and then threw it at my legs. The ball hit me (but I was already out of bounds for 2+ secs). The ball rolled further out of bounds after it hit me.
The big question is: Who gets the ball? I say it come over to me since I was already out of bounds. My son saids that he should get the ball possession.
Who is correct?
Answer
HI Ted,
One thing to remember is that all 10 players on the court must have some kind of status. In-bounds, out of boudns, front court, back court, etc. If the ball hit you while your standing out of bounds, and you were the last to touch the ball, then the ball would go to your son. Your the last person to touch the ball, and you were out of bounds. It's not the last person to touch the ball while in bounds. What your saying is that the ball should get awarded to you, because if your standing out of bounds, you don't count. That is not the case. I hope I answered your question. Feel free to ask more if you like.
