shooting follow through
Question
My daughter is in 8th grade. She has played hoops for 5 years now and has a decent jump shot. One issue I have not been able to correct is her follow through. She is right handed and after she shoots, her right hand and arm dont go straight like they should into the hoop. Her right hand will go across her body. She has definitely improved with age and strength, but her right hand usually finishes over to the left. I would say even about with her left eye. WHat drills can I have her do so she can get the correct follow thru and have her shooting arm and hand go straight into the hoop? I have her shoot a lot from close in. She ususally looks ok. The more she moves out with further shots the more her hand will come across her body during the follow thru. Her elbow is usually in good position prior to the shot
Thanks in advance!
Answer
HI Scot,
That is pretty typical for a young girl that doesn't have a lot of strength. As she moves farther away from the basket, instruct her to use more of her legs to push off and get her strength from there. She is using her arms to compensate which is causing her to follow through across her body. So have her try bending her knees more as she steps back further away from the ball.
