Game plans and plays
Question
Hello Coach Jones.Im an amateur coach currently in charge of a high school team.As a player,my strongest point was defence so teaching my kids proper defensive form has gone pretty smoothly and I often receive great remarks about how organised my players are on defense.
However I'm having a great deal of trouble trying to get them to play their offense as good as their defense. We are very good at preventing the opposition from scoring but cant manage to score against a team with much weaker defense than us.Do have any examples/tips on how to construct an offensive play with clear goal and how to attain it?
Answer
HI Coach -
First I congratulate you on teaching defense first. Normally it is the most difficult team aspect to teach. This means your team understands the meaning of 'team play.'
In all reality there are only three offenses: one-on-one, give-and-go, and pick-and-roll. An offense should be designed with one goal in mind; developing a mismatch or mismatches. Coach, at the risk of seeming like I'm not answering your question directly I must tell you, all of this is covered either on my website or in my book, "Basketball - It's All About The Shot," the book is a free PDF download within the confines of the website BasketballShootingCoach(dot)com.
The funny thing here is as good as your defense is, it will grow exponentially as your team learns to play give-and-go and pick-and-roll basketball. I don't like designed plays, I like to design my players; teach them court vision and fast break offense. That means fast break full court and fast break half court. This opens up passing lanes, opportunities for obvious picks, obvious back doors and many lay-up opportunities.
I know all this will help, especially once you've read the book. Pleas keep in touch and let me know.
