loose ball foul... does basket count
Question
Team A shoots the ball. While the shot is in the air a player from Team A commits a foul on Team B player while going for position of a rebound. The shot goes in and the foul was called on Team A. Team B is in a bonus free throw situation. Is this considered an offensive foul or loose ball foul? Does Team B get to shoot free throws? In our game the basket was counted and no free throws were awarded... I was under the impression that if the basket counted it should be free throws on the other end... or not count the basket (had the foul occurred earlier) and it would be a change of possession. Could you please clarify? Thanks.
Answer
Hi Josh,
This is a great question. First off, the basket definitely counts. Once a team takes a shot, neither team has "team control", so therefore if any fouls are committed while the ball is in flight it is a loose ball foul. In this situation, team B should have been awarded their bonus 1+1 free-throws. I hope that cleared it up for you.
Thank you for the question.
