Loose Ball Fouls/ Bonus Situation
Question
A player on Team A shoots the ball. While the shot is in the air a player from Team B commits a foul on the Team A shooter while going for position of a rebound (After shooter clearly landed and also ran to rebound). The shot goes in and the foul was called on Team B. Team A is in a double bonus free throw situation. Is this considered a shooting foul or loose ball foul? How many free throws does the player on Team A get to shoot? In our game the basket was counted and one additional free throw was awarded, but the ref clearly emphasized foul after the shot. Was this officiated correctly? If a non shooter on Team A was fouled after the shot was released, how many free throws would the non shooter have received? I thought 2 free throws would have been more appropriate, and if not that, then 0 free throws. Thanks.
Answer
Hi Matt,
First of all in this situation, once a shooter has returned to the floor he's no longer considered the shooter. Once the shot is released no team has "Team Control" so yes this is considered a "loose ball foul" although the term loose ball is only used in the NBA. The basket definitely should count, and the player on team A that was fouled should have been awarded two shots because team A was in double bonus. The official got the call wrong. Had the player on Team who shot the ball not returned to the floor yet, he would still have had shooter status and would have been given one free throw if the shot counted.
Any player that is fouled on the floor when a team is in bonus or double bonus should shoot the bonus free throws. The only exception is on a player control or offensive foul. No bonus free throws are awarded on a player control foul.
The other exception is a player who is intentionally or flagrantly fouled in the bonus situation would automatically receive two free throws no matter what. I hope that cleared it up for you and thank you for your question.
