nervousness
Question
Hello there,
I have been playing basketball for years and I have truly grown to love the game. It seems like I can't go a day without playing. But when it comes to real organized games most of the time I feel like I am holding myself back because I am afraid of screwing up. I get too anxious and excited to even think on the court. When it come to pick up games and such I feel liberated and free to do whatever I want as a guard. I could score and make plays with the best of them. Is there a way to overcome this fear? Your help is greatly appreciated.
Answer
Glad to hear of your love for the game, Alberto! There are a couple of things that should help with the nervousness. First there is wisdom in the 5 P's: Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance. Make sure when you are playing unorganized games you are trying to challenge yourself defensively by guarding the other teams best players and offensively by trying to make the players around you better. Then be confident that if you can do well in those situations, an organized game is no different.
Accept the fact that your nervousness is natural and just shows how much you care. I worried if I was not nervous before a game. It helps get you ready to play, recognize that and move on confidently to use the skills you have developed to play the game. Before the game starts, take a minute to relish the atmosphere (crowd, setting, excitement) and then focus on the things your team is doing well. Strive to make your team better, if you concentrate on your team your play will be natural and you will enjoy the game even more.
Keep playing and welcome the excitement it brings!
What should I do?? please help sir.
