Dunking after ACL surgery
Question
Dear mr. Temple,
My name is Elmar and i'm from holland.
When i was 17 years old i could do a windmill and dunk with two hands.
At the age of 18 someone injured my knee by hitting my knee with his knee during a basketball practice.
After recovering from this injury after 2 months i tored my left acl.
My physical therapist told me that it is possible to play with a torn acl, so i started playing againg after a few months.
After two week of feeling good at practice i tried dunking again and when i tried to dunk, i tored my other acl of my right knee.
So after going to the physical therapist again, he said i could play, but when it goes wrong again, i have to do surgery.
so of course it didn't go well so at the age of 19 i did a acl surgery of my left knee, because that knee i had the most problems with.
I was really happy with the surgery after rehab, because i felt i could do everything again after 6 months. I still had a torn right acl.
So i started playing basketball again, but on my right knee i had a brace.
After a year i was still not familiar with my right knee.
I could play basketball, but not as good as before, and i didn't dare to dunk and go insite the paint.
So i decided to do another surgery of my right acl.
That's about 3 months ago.
I'm 21 now and i want to dunk again when i got fully recovered. Do you think this is possible?
The reason why i'm asking you this is because i want to be confident on the court again.
When i do a dunk i'm sure i'll be able to go insite the paint like i used to.
i'm 6,2" tall. I would do anything to dunk again!
Answer
Elmar,
Thank you for your question, however this is outside my expertise. Nobody other than a physician or physical therapist should give you the go ahead to do anything that could possibly cause injury again. It sounds like your prone to this type of injury and that it could happen again. Please seek the proper medical advice from a Doctor.
Good luck.
What do I do?
