Fair or foul ball
Question
If a bunt is placed down one of the lines and rolls into foul territory and then rolls back into fair territory, all before it reaches the bag, is it fair or foul?
Answer
A decision on fair or foul is never made until one of three things happen.
1) The ball touches the ground and passes 1st or 3rd base.
2) Someone or something touches the ball.
3) The ball stops.
Once one of these 3 things happen, fair or foul is determined, but never before one of them occuring. The fair or foul call is based on the location of the ball at the time one of these 3 happening. For instance, if a ball is touched by a fielder standing in fair territory while the ball is in foul territory, the ball is foul. So to actually answer your question, the ball would be fair as long as it stopped or was touched in fair territory. I hope this answers your question.
