Should I try out for my high school baseball team
Question
I used to play baseball in 7th and 8th grade. Im gonna be a senior next year. When I used to play I was pretty bad. One season I went 3 for 29 with about 19 strikeouts. But I wa great defensively. I played Center, Third, First, and Left. I remembe rone specific game where we were in the playoffs and I was playin First and I was moved to Center whenevr the heart of the lineup would be coming up because I was the only player they trusted for defense. Anyway recently I have started playing again with friends and I am somehow really good. When I used to play I wore glasses and never really could pick up the ball at the plate, but now I have contacts and when Im up I can see the stitches on the ball when I hit. I can see so clear. And now I realize why I was so bad , it was because I never really could see. Even defensively when I was in the outfield my glasses would always fall off running, but I was able to make up for it with my speed and I always saw the ball at the last second. It was really hard playing like that and I had no confidence at all in myself. And now my defense has even improved now that I can see the ball come off the bat. The last game I played I went 5-6 with 3 homeruns, 1 triple, 1 single, and 8 RBI. One game I had 3 homeruns and 10 RBI. 2 homeruns came in 1 inning. Im not just hitting better, but am crushing the ball. I even play with kids who are on the high school baseball team. Im always first picked when picking teams. I have gotten alot of confidence and I am thinking of trying out next year. I really want to, but most of the people on the team only know the old me from back then and are gonna look at me like Im crazy for trying out and I wont even get a chance to show what I can do. The high school team is also pretty good. Varsity won the county championship and they are expecting to do even better next year. It would be great to shock them all and show them how good I really am. What do you think?
Answer
Luigi,
I see no problem with you trying out for your high school team. That's what high school baseball is for. Keep in mind that pick-up ballgames at the park aren't the same as high school competition and you will have a very steep learning curve to deal with. Don't make a spectacle of yourself (don't tell everybody what you're going to do, just do it) and go out and do the best you can. You might want to have a brief conversation with one of the coaches to let them know your intentions and ask if there is anything you should do to prepare yourself.
From reading your note, I think you know that this may be an uphill battle, but you never know. Eye-hand coordination is a huge part of baseball, so if your eyes were recently corrected, you may see some improvement. My only suggestion is not to look at this as a way to "shock" people or prove a point. Do this because you love to play baseball and want to be a part of your schools team. This is a commitment that goes beyond the batters box. You have to decide if your time is better spent on the baseball field or focusing on something else and only you would know that. Whatever you decide, look at this as an opportunity to challenge yourself. Your life will be filled with moments and decisions just like this until the day you die. The sooner you start making responsible decisions and pursuing what you want, the better. Even if you don't make the team, you can gain the respect of the other players and coaching staff by working hard and keeping your mouth shut. Do everything the coaches ask of you, work harder than the other guys, and most importantly, have fun.
I hope this helped, Luigi. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.
