batter called out for jumping out of box
Question
during an allstar game age 12yrs old. I was base umpire and behind the plate was a very good and experienced umpire. the first pitch of the 4th inning was again a very hard fastball right down the tube. the batter probably scared jumped from the box.He did not swing just jumped away from a perfect strike. the plate called the batter out? The coach jumped up and was pleading to me saying it's only a strike, I kept my mouth shut, but I'm almost sure it's only a strike. the plate keep saying he knows the call because he missed that one on a test at a umpire school!!?? So I ask you did my mentor get his test and answers out of a cracker jack box!!

base umpire who should have been plate!!!
Answer
Dave,
You are absolutely correct.
The only mistake you made was not discussing the play with the home plate umpire and trying to get him to reverse his call. He has final say, but it is your responsibility to speak up. The coach should have played the rest of the game under protest as a rule was interpreted incorrectly.
Hope this helps, Dave. Let me know if you need anything else.
