Question
how can tell where the ball will drop I have a problem runing up to far

Answer
Judging a fly ball is something you have to develop.  You have to practice and practice.  See if you have a friend who is willing to hit you fly balls.  You will get better at judging them as you see more and more flies.  If you can't find someone to hit you flies, another way you can practice is to find a tall building where you can bounce a tennis ball way up high off of it.  Make sure you are doing this somewhere where it is allowed--don't get in trouble!  Another practice technique I have used in the past is to have a friend hit golf balls to you.  This is dangerous!  Golfballs go twice as far and fast as baseballs, so BE CAREFUL!  If you have enough room to do this, your eyes will get used to tracking that smaller ball...when you come back to baseballs, they will seem like watermelons and you can judge them more easily.  Another tip: WATCH THE PITCH...watch it as it goes TO the batter...and you will have a better chance of seeing it come off the bat...you can also develop a good instinct for getting a "jump" when you watch the pitch.  A slower pitch might mean the batter will be ahead of it, and hit it to left field (a righty hitter.)  An outside pitch or a really hot fastball might mean that the hitter will be late.  As you watch the ball go to the batter, you'll find that you have an idea of which way it is going to go off of the bat.  An old school thought is that if a batter fouls a ball straight back, that meant that he was right on it (as far as timing) but just under it.  If he gets the same pitch again, chances are he will hit to dead center.  Anyway, try to see as many fly balls as you can.  Practice practice practice.  It sounds too simple, but this too: NEVER take your eye off the ball.  Over time, as you see more fly balls, you'll find that you already have a good idea of where the ball will fall the split second it comes off the bat...once you get there, all you have to do is get yourself to that spot before the ball comes down.  ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS go TWO STEPS BACK when a fly ball is hit.  And ALWAYS charge forward when the ball is hit on the ground.  Is it possible you have been charging in on flies?  Don't do that!  Move backward two or three steps as the ball comes off the bat...your eyes, while moving BACK with you, will track where it is heades.  Learn to run on the front of your feet.  Very important!  RUN ON THE FRONT OF YOUR FEET and run smooth, so you don't bounce your head when your feet land.  It is a big factor in how effectively your eyes follow the ball in flight.  Hope this helps.  Maybe you can read some of my other posts on the outfield.  Good luck!
