from outfield yes, infield no

Question
hey mike,
well im 16 and mainly play catcher, pitcher or outfield (in that order- most played to least) but as several members of my team are out through one reason or another i may be called upon to play infield. thats not the problem, the problem is that when playing infield conventional over-the-top or 3/4 throwing just doesnt work for me. it always tends to be to high or wide. meaning that i have to through side arm to get the accuracy even on throw downs as a catcher. what i dont get is that when playing outfield using the same mechanics as i would on the infield my throws are really accurate.
the questions are:
1) is this mental or is it something physical??
2) either way as i am not often called upon to play infield should i correct it as i have to throw s-arm on throw downs aswell or should i leave it. and if i should correct it do you have any advice on how to do so??
3) as a general question do you know of anything that i can do to improve my accuracy on throw downs as i am nowhere near as accurate as i was when i was the starting cather for great britain

thanks in advance for any insight or advice that you may be able to give

take care

Answer
Throwing sidearm is usually frowned upon because of three main reasons. First, it's typically not as accurate as 3/4 or over the top, and the ball will tend to slide away rather than a true flight towards your target. Second, sidearm tends to sacrifice some power, which tends to lessen throwing speed. Third, you would be more prone to injury since more stress is put on the elbow.

Those reasons are why coaches want position players to avoid sidearm motions. Having said that, there are exceptions. I've seen many players who can safely, accurately, and with good velocity throw with a sidearm motion. Whether you are one of those, impossible for me to tell without being able to coach you. My inclination is to believe that you should try to change your motion somewhat to 3/4 which at the very least should improve your accuracy on throw-downs.
