Round the horn?
Question
Hi Michael,
Could you give a break down on how the ball should be thrown around the
bases on a recorded out in the infield? Where it should go say when
out is recorded-
1. Strikeout
2. Put-out at first
3. Fly-out to first base
4. Fly-out to second base
5. Fly-out to third base
6. Fly-out to pitch
7. Fly-out to catcher
8. 5-4-3 double play
I'm asking since I have seen different "formulas" exhibited by teams as
they take it around the horn, some including the firstbaseman on
everything, others doing it differently.
thanks
Steve
Answer
Steve,
There really is no "formula" for it. It is simply a means of keeping all of the infielders awake and alert and giving the pitcher a moment or two to gather himself and stay focused. My teams always went 3B, SS, 2B, 3B and bypassed the 1B. Why? I don't know, it is just how we did it. On a putout at first, the 1B always threw it to the fielder who made the assist and then it went to the 3B.
No set pattern.
Coach
Steve,
For instance, grounder to SS throw to first and an out.
1B to SS, SS to 2B, 2B to 3B and back to pitcher
grounder to 1B flip to pitcher covering for out:
P to 2B, 2B to SS, SS to 3B and back to pitcher
if out recorded by catcher, he always starts with throw to 3B
It isn't difficult and the kids pick up on it quickly.
