defensive time out
Question
QUESTION: When can a baseman (or outfielder) ask for time? If they have the ball after a put-out, can they ask right away?
ANSWER: Hey Zack,
I cannot think of a time when they could not ask for time out after a put-out.. Can you be more specific?

QUESTION: If a batter hits to 2nd base and the man on 2nd advances to 3rd and the batter is out at first, many times you see the 1st baseman running towards the runner on 3rd as he is asking for time. If the runner is between 3rd and home, would the ump grant time, or is time not callable as there is a live runner between bases?
Answer
Hey Zack,
Now I understand the question..
If the runner is "Still," most of the time, an umpire will grant you the time out. Some umpires will wait till the runner heads back toward third, then grant the request, which I agree with. He has to be careful of calling TIME too soon as someone may throw the ball away.
