Hitting a change-up
Question
I'm a volunteer dad who helps out our 10 & under baseball team. When facing a pitcher who can throw a change up, is it best to move up in the box toward the pitcher (to hit it before it drops) or should a batter stay in their normal position (middle/back of the box) and load, step, wait, & time the swing?
Answer
I never recommend a kid move in the box.He should learn how to read the ball.A good change will start thigh high and fall out of the zone.Try to get them to make the ball be waist high before they will swing at the change up.In other words tell them to make the pitcher get the ball up in the strike zone and lay off low pitches. Also please do not tell your kids to step. They should either reach the toe,or glide the foot to the pitcher.Too step means take your whole body forward. Then you have a kid who lunges at the ball.
